The Art of Science

"Truth, which only doth judge itself, teacheth that
the enquiry of truth, which is the love-making or wooing of it,
the knowledge of truth, which is the presence of it,
and the belief of truth, which is the enjoying of it,
is the sovereign good of human nature."

The Francis Bacon Research Trust, like Francis Bacon and the Rosicrucian fraternity he worked with and led, researches the Ancient Wisdom knowledges that lie behind the Baconian-Rosicrucian work as well as the work itself, following the Treasure Trail which Bacon laid down as his method of teaching his Art of Discovery.

The aim of Bacon’s Art is to discover truth itself, and in particular the ultimate Truth, which he recognised as being divine Love—the single, summary Law or Desire of the universe.

With Bacon’s method the discovery of truth goes hand in hand with the practice of truth. Science is knowledge, and knowledge is not true knowledge without the practical experience of it. As we can never discover the ultimate truth of Love without practising love, Bacon’s Science is an Ethical Science, its philanthropic purpose being to relieve the poverty, misery and ignorance of all who suffer in such a state, and thereby to glorify God, or Love, through the practice of charity or good works. By this means Love, or God, the Truth, is made manifest and known.

To do this well and efficiently is not necessarily easy, as the history of the human race proves. It is an Art which, when practised well, produces a Science of Love, which is an Illumination. Moreover, it is an Art and Science which requires discovery and practice on many levels of existence, physical and metaphysical, from the outer world of effects to the innermost world of causes. The former is a key to the discovery of the latter, whilst the latter is the creative cause of the former. Since causes produce the effects, if we do not like the effects and if we know the causes, by altering or modulating the causes we can change the effects. Likewise, if we discover the supreme Cause, the Law of Love, and learn how to work with it, and if we put that Law into operation in our lives and surroundings, we can bring about the works of love and produce miracles.

This is the supreme Art, which is alchemical in nature. It has the capacity to transmute all base matter into spiritual gold, to change all gross and ugly conditions into fine and beautiful ones, and to transform all ignorance into true Science or Illumination.

It is an ancient Art, practised down the ages by the Adepts or ‘Scientists’ of the Hermetic Wisdom. The Hermetic Master, Francis Bacon, improved the Art still further, for the benefit of humanity and the whole world.

But it has to be practised. The Art is known by means of itself. This is the great teaching.
